I am eleven year old Lizzie Penna and I was watching the Oprah Winfrey show on April 4th, 2008 when it changed my life. The show was about puppy mills and it showed the horrific conditions puppies and breeding dogs must endure. I felt so much sadness for the abused and neglected animals I knew I had to do something to help. I just didn't understand how or why people could be so cruel.
I began my efforts with a fundraiser held at my school. With the support from my classmates, I was able to raise funds that I donated to a local animal shelter. From there I started collecting towels from my community and delivering them to local shelters, which turned into a year round towel and supply drive.
Through bake sales, car washes, lemonade stands, annual bowling benefit and humane education programs at local schools, I have raised funds and awareness for the cause, as well as delivering thousands of donated towels, blankets and supplies to shelters and rescues. Even with my own allergy to the animals I love so much, it has not slowed me down in any way. Peace for Puppies was created from my passion to help save animals and to make a difference in their lives.
